Samsung and Apple together to integrate iTunes Movie and AirPlay 2 on Samsung Smart TVs

Announcement that nobody expected and yet it arrived yesterday. Apple is ready to land on Smart TVs, especially on Samsung models , with support for AirPlay 2 and access to the iTunes Movies and TV Shows services.

The following is the Samsung press release :

SEOUL, KOREA – JANUARY 6, 2019 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. Announces today that iTunes Movie and TV Show will arrive and support for Apple AirPlay 2 on Samsung Smart TVs in 2019 from the summer. Support on the 2018 models will be available via a signature update. For the first time, the iTunes Movie and Tv Show app will be available on Samsung Smart TVs in over 100 countries. Support for AirPlay 2 will arrive on Smart TVs in 190 countries.

With the new iTunes Movies and Tv Shows app on Samsung Smart TVs, Samsung customers can access their existing iTunes library and browse the iTunes Store and buy or rent from a selection of hundreds of thousands of movies and TV episodes – including great selection of films in 4K HDR. iTunes Movies and TV Shows will work seamlessly with Samsung Smart TV services such as the Universal Guide, the new Bixby and the search, to create a consistent experience between Samsung platforms.

With support for AirPlay 2, Samsung customers will be able to play their own videos, photos, music, podcasts and more from their Apple devices directly on Samsung Smart TVs, including QLED 4K and 8K TV, The Frame and Serif lifestyle TVs, as well as others Samsung UHD and HD models.

“We pride ourselves in working with industry leaders to provide the widest selection of content and services on our Smart TVs,” said Won-Jin Lee, Samsung Electronics Executive Vice President, Service Business of Visual Display. “Bringing more content, value and functionality to open platforms for Samsung Smart TV owners and Apple customers through iTunes and AirPlay is ideal for everyone.”

“We can not wait to bring the experience of iTunes and AirPlay 2 to many other customers around the world via Samsung Smart TVs, so owners of iPhone, iPad and Mac will have another way to enjoy all their fantastic content in a big screen in their homes, “said Eddy Cue, senior vice president of Internet Software and Services at Apple.

Apple has already updated the dedicated page of AirPlay (at least the English one) adding the news concerning the integration in TV.

  • Control everything with a rap : Use the remote that you always have with you your iPhone. Built-in controls will appear in-apps, on the lock screen and on the control center. So you can simply put play, pause, go ahead, back and adjust the scroll of your TV
  • Put Siri at the head of your TV : With AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, you can use Siri on your iPhone to send a video to your TV. Even better, ask Siri to play a specific show in a specific room.
  • TV compatible with AirPlay 2. Now it’s smart : The major TV manufacturers will integrate AirPlay 2 directly into their TVs, so now you can effortlessly share or mirror almost anything from your iOS or Mac device directly to your AirPlay 2 enabled smart TV. You can also play music on your TV and sync it with other AirPlay 2 compatible speakers anywhere in your home.

Probably the support will also come to other brands producing Smart TV, but we will have to wait. We’ll see if anything new will come from the CES in Las Vegas.
